We acknowledge that the land where we gather to learn is the ancestral home of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Neutral peoples. We honour the long history and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples on this land.
At Sorrel and Cedar Early Learning and Care, this acknowledgment is more than words, it is a call to action. We are committed to:
- Incorporating Indigenous perspectives into our daily learning experiences by sharing stories, songs, and teachings from Indigenous cultures, with respect and care.
- Using natural materials and land-based learning in a way that honours Indigenous ways of knowing and being, always remembering that land is not a backdrop, but a teacher.
- Revisiting our practices regularly, to examine how colonial systems might still shape our care, and how we can shift away from them with intention.
- Celebrating Indigenous joy and brilliance year-round, not just during heritage months or holidays.
- Encouraging children’s natural sense of justice by gently introducing ideas of fairness, care for the land, and the importance of listening to those whose voices have been silenced.
We are grateful to live, learn, and grow here. We promise to care for this land, its stories, and the people who have stewarded it since time immemorial. We walk this path with humility, openness, and the understanding that reconciliation is an ongoing journey; one that we must travel together, hand in hand, with the children as our compass.
